What’s it for?
This activity set has been designed to practise and reinforce all of Phase 2 sounds. Learners sound out simple words, all only using sounds within Phase 2).
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for Early Years children who are just learning these sounds for the first time, pupils in Year 1 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for older learners who need to revisit these sounds.
How to use it?
Print resources onto card rather than paper, cut following dotted lines and place the ‘word cards’ on a table top with the last section folded backwards (where the ‘dashed lines’ indicate) to ‘hide’ the image behind the word. Learners sound out and read each word, then check by looking at the ‘hidden’ image (folded back) to see if they read the word correctly. With the end section folded back these cards can also ‘stand up’ on a table top rather than being laid flat, inviting learners to explore them and giving the activity an interactive feel.

This download includes two A4, landscape pdf sheets, one with ‘circular’ shaped (paper/card) beads, the other with ‘square’ shaped (paper/card) beads.
What’s it for?
This resource has been designed to practise ‘ordering the alphabet’ as well as matching upper and lowercase alphabet letters together. Whilst working on this activity learners will develop their fine motor control as well as improve their familiarity of these letters. Learners will need to decide between upper and lowercase letters as they select letters to thread as well as consider which letter/s come next.
This is an ideal activity to keep learners busy and independent.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children and pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
The layout includes x6 rows and x9 columns of circular/square shaped beads each with an upper and lowercase letter. Beads are arranged in rainbow order to help guide and motivate learners in finding the next number (and colour) in the pattern.
Dotted guide line showing where to cut and punch a hole are included. The hole to punch is 5mm in size though a smaller hole punch could be used (to increase the fine motor skills challenge!)
Two versions of the letter ‘k’ are included as some learners may be more used to the look of one ‘font style’ than the other.
Learners will need a piece of string/ribbon/pipecleaner to thread their paper/card beads onto.
Suggestions
We recommend that these beads are printed onto card to improve their durability whilst learners are busy sorting through the different letter beads and threading them.
We feel that although the circular beads look equally lovely, the square beads are much easier and quicker to prepare, requiring only straight cuts to separate them.
Learners who might find ordering the letters of the alphabet challenging may benefit from having a upper and/or lowercase alphabet in front of them to use as a reference and support them.

What is it?

What’s it for?
These are for learners to hold and use to ‘point’ to their learning. These pointers were designed to help develop one-to-one correspondence when reading but could be just as helpful for a variety of activities, such as ordering the alphabet, counting objects etc. These resources are ideal to use alongside our ‘ants on apples’ set of rhymes - also available.

How to make it?
Print onto white card, follow dotted lines to cut out each hand/pointer shape, attach a wooden lolly stick to the back with sticky tape and they’re ready to use! We recommend keeping a (rainbow coloured!) set in a little pot in the reading area for learners to help themselves to. Colour choice can be very important and it can be especially motivating to be able to choose/use your favourite colour. This download includes x26 simple, predictable alphabet rhymes - one for every letter of the alphabet. Each rhyme is in colour and black and white (so x52 sheets in total). All rhymes are presented in landscape orientation.
What’s it for?
These rhymes have been designed for learners to practise reading simple words (images make clear what the nouns are) and practise each phonic sound using a pointer (or pointy finger!) Some rhymes are more ‘silly’ than others(!) This is a unique, fun and engaging way to practise reading and phonics that all learners will enjoy. The font used is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 50, so a large, ‘easy to read’ size.
Each rhyme follows this structure -

Letters a, b, c, d, e, f ,g h, i, j, l, m, n, p, s include the word ‘on’ within the rhyme.

How to use this resource
Learners might like to practise reading these on their own, in pairs or small groups or even as a class during a whole carpet session, reading/singing along together.
We recommend printing out the colour versions of these (the colours look so lovely!) and laminating each rhyme to help keep them sturdy, in good condition. Standing the set of lamintated rhymes on one end inside a plastic box postioned in a ‘reading area’ are really enticing, especially when stored with a ‘pot of pointers’ to use with the rhymes.
Suggestions
Classes of early years and year one children are really motivated to use these and very good at practising them quietly to themselves. Younger children have often been heard using ‘whispery voices’ while focused on this reading activity, independently (lovely to see!). Learners also really enjoy being able to use these rhymes with a ‘pointer’ (selected from a pot of pointers!) stored with the rhymes, ready to use.
Pointers are available separately (left/right handed or together), they just need securing to a lolly stick.

These resources have been designed to be used at the end of learning Phase 2 (once all the sounds have been introduced) to check learners knowledge. There are two sheets of the same design with a variation of the challenge provided, enabling you to choose the right level of support for your learners.
Who’s it for?
These resources have been designed to be used at the end of Phase 2 by Reception/Year 1 pupils - primarily for assessment purposes. This resource is also ideal for supporting older pupils with additional learning needs.
How to use it
Learners sound out a word (looking at a picture) and write graphemes within each word on the lines provided.
The resources included are at two levels, the icon at the lower right side indicates the level of challenge as higher/lower.
At the top of both sheets a ‘colour key’ is included - recapping on the Phase 2 sounds and order these are taught. Red sounds are introduced first s a t p i n (so should be most familiar), orange sounds are next m d g o c k, followed by yellow ck e b r u h then green f ff l ll ss which are the last of the Phase 2 sounds.
Both resources are provided with and without the (colour coded) Phase 2 sounds at the top at the sheet.
All images included within both resources can be sounded out only using sounds within Phase 2.

The less challenging sheet (providing more support) focuses on CVC words and under the lines (to write on) includes ‘sound dots’. These are colour-coded supporting learners as to which colour group that sound is from as well as making clear how many sounds are in each word. This sheet also has one CCVC (frog) and one CVCVC (lemon) word at the end.

What’s it for?
This resource is to practise identifying the initial sounds for x26 images and matching these to the written letter/sound (grapheme). Both upper and lowercase letters are including - helping to reinforce both.
How to use this resource
This matching activity has been designed to be an activity for an individual or group where the square (cards) are already cut up (and hole punched!), shuffled and displayed either loosely on a table top/carpet or already attached on a ring. Learners look at each picture card and (if they are able) say what it is. Learners then say the initial sound for each picture and match the ‘picture’ card to the alphabet ‘letter’ card which shows the same initial sound. Once the set is matched into pairs (picture and letter cards together) learners can then order the card pairs from the beginning to the end of the alphabet or in reverse which can be much trickier!
Pictures included are apple, banana, car, dog (Dachshund!), egg, frog, grass, house, ink, jam, key, lemon, milk, nine numbers, orange, pink pig, quarter, robot, sun, tree, upside-down umbrella, van, wall (not to be confused with ‘bricks’ !) xylophone, yellow yoyo, zebra.
This alphabet matching set could be used as a reference resource for learners e.g. to cross-check the correct orientation of individual letters if unsure when writing.
Games
This ‘Alphabet Match’ set could also be used for a variety of games and to accompany and involve learners during rhymes and songs, usable both inside the classroom and outdoors (especially if laminated to improve durability in all types of weather!) Hide and seek match could make a fun game where one half of the set (e.g. all the picture cards or all the letter cards) are missing and learners need to find them and match them up.
Suggestion
Brightly coloured plastic keyrings (which can be easily opened by unclipping the plastic) as seen on the main resource image are ideal for this resource and can be purchased online easily. Alternatively string or thin ribbon would work well. If a small amount of velcro was attached to both ends of string/ribbon with some strong glue this would help learners to be more independent using this resource.

Page 1 This resource explores the concept of ‘opposites’ through two pictures showing the same scene with x9 differences (between the pictures) to identify. These differences are all ‘opposites’. Learners draw a circle around the part of the scene where they identify an opposite, they could used a different colour for each pair of opposites.
Once learners identify a difference between the picture scenes they find the matching labels below. Learners link the two opposite (word) labels using a straight line connecting these words.

The layout of this page is exactly the same layout at page 1 with the opposite differences identified in both picture scenes with a circle around the image and lines connecting the word label to make these clear.

What’s it for?
This activity has been designed to give learners an opportunity to look more closely at a selection of the first 200 high frequency words and practise reading these words by sounding them out. All words have been sorted into colour groups depending on which phonics phase they fit in with so words can be introduced at the right time for your learners. This set of words is ‘nouns’ - all words fit in with phonics Phases 3, 5 and 6+.
This is a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently, during ‘busy/quiet times’ or those needing some individual 1:1 support.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Y2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource is also suitable for older learners with additional learning needs.
How to use it?
Learners cut out words (following dotted lines) at the base of the sheet, sound out the graphemes to read the word, then match the word with the image - placing word cards in the boxes underneath the images. Word cards are to be secured with glue once learners are happy they have matched the words with the images.
Tip!
To avoid words getting lost/in a muddle, encourage learners to only cut out one word at a time, read and match it to the picture and once it has been secured to the sheet with glue, move on to cutting out the next word.
Resource Details…
These words are all from the list of ‘first 200 high frequency words’ to read and spell. It is possible to ‘sound out’ these words.
Where individual letters are underlined - this indicates that together these (underlined) letters have one sound, e.g. ‘ow’ in ‘town’. This is also indicated on the ‘key’ included on the sheet itself (right side). Any ‘tricky’/‘irregular’ letters are identified in red, such as ‘e’ in ‘garden’ which can be pronounced as an ‘uh’ sound.
Purple indicates that these words are from Phase 3, turquoise indicates that the words are from 'phase 5’ and grey indicates that the words are from phase 6+. The ‘title’ (top, left of the sheet) can be used as a visual reference to keep this colour coded system clearly in mind.
